If you are looking for an excellent costume idea, you would be interested in considering the sixties and the seventies in television and film series.

There were many excellent and unforgettable television shows and films that have been created during these two decades and it is principally because of the fact that they are so unforgettable that costumes paying homage to some of these series are costumes that appear to be so popular. But the 1960's and the 1970's have been particularly productive in a brand new: they gave birth to the science fiction genre and made it accessible to the general public and especially to the  entire family. There were films beforehand in science fiction but the 1960's and the 1970's made science fiction into a household genre and there were two particular series that helped get this done.

Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry's brainchild is the first one of these series. Obviously, Star Trek was famous for things like the first interracial kiss and the use of physics in a way that confused many people, but it was also very famous for the types of costumes worn by the crew of the legendary USS Enterprise.

For example, if you are a Star Trek captain from this time period, you would be wearing a uniform that involved a mustard top and black trousers. This is the costume that would be recognized instantly by people whether they were fans of the show or not. Another great example, Star Trek was also renowned for "redshirt syndrome", in which a non-main character in a red shirt would beam down to a planet with the team and get killed. There are chances that wearing a costume inspired by the members of the USS Enterprise crew will earn you some cheers and congratulations from the party guests.

Star Trek did not represent the only science fiction franchise to get its beginning during these two periods of ten years however as Star Wars as well had its foundation laid during this time period. Involving a form of energy called "The Force", many alien creatures as well as special effects generated by high technology, Star Wars was created by George Lucas and was a totally different style than Star Trek as well as the other science fiction series. Star Wars' main characters are Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Darth Vader, which are an excellent basis to create an original costume. Alternatively, there are storm troopers, imperial soldiers in grey uniforms and the starfighter pilot in orange uniform, Wedge Antilles, that would all be very recognizable as well.

There are many other choices in 1960's and 1970's science fiction genre, like The Twilight Zone, Logan's Run or Planet of the Apes, for you to choose from, which makes it an inexhaustible source for Halloween costume ideas.
